Training:
I expect every player to be in the Gym, kitted out 10 minutes before the start of our training sessions. Gym time is limited, so during the time we have, put the effort in.
Monday’s 8.30pm until 10pm St Fintan’s High school Sutton
Thursday’s 7pm until 8.30pm St David’s School, Artane
If you cannot make a training session or if you are going to be late for a session, either phone, text or email me.
Defensive philosophy:
Hard-nosed man-to-man defence: pushing your player to their weak hand where your teammate will be positioned to give help.
Communication: player who is guarding the ball, calls “ball”, help side player calls “help left/right”.
Defend with your feet: Use your footwork to impose yourself on the player you are marking and hopefully gain good position to stand for a charge. Do not give away cheap fouls.
Five-man box out and rebound: Every player boxes out their man and every player rebounds. Do not assume your teammate is going to grab the ball, you grab it!!!
Offensive philosophy:
Inside – out: Our first offensive goal is to try to get the ball as close as we can to the basket for a high percentage shot.
3-dribble rule: If you cannot make a move to the basket with-in three dribbles, then pass up the option.
Screens: Set proper screens for each other and use the screens that have been set correctly.
Decisions: It is not about who scores points on the team, rather that we as a TEAM score more points that the opposition. Make good decisions with the basketball and if a teammate is in a better position, PASS THEM THE BALL.
Coach’s role:
My job as coach is to put players on the court who make good decisions and know how to play as part of a team. Consider what your own strengths and weaknesses are and how you can contribute to the overall team’s success. Play within your own limitations e.g. if you are not a 3 point shot maker, don’t take 3 point shot.
