Killester Basketball Jamboree

Saturday, the 13 th of May 2006 saw Liverpool face West Ham in the final of the FA Cup in Cardiff 's Millennium Stadium.   However for sixty five Special Olympics athletes, a far more important event was happening that same day in Greendale , Kilbarrack when Killester Basketball Club staged it's second end of season Jamboree.    The Jamboree was first staged in 2005 and this year's event lived up to the high standards set last year.

A total of five clubs were represented at the event as athletes from Killester were joined by visitors from Mount Argus Tigers, Bray Lakers, Steadfast House Carrickmacross and Prosper Fingal .   The participants were all buzzing and ready to get into action when they arrived at the gym which is the venue used for Killester's National League teams' matches.

Once the registration process had been completed it was time for the parade of participating athletes and this was followed by the reading of the Special Olympic athlete's oath which this year was read by Aine Lawlor .   Formalities completed, the morning session was given over to the divisioning process.

The Jamboree allows athletes to compete in either 3 on 3 basketball matches or in the overall skills competition. Nearly thirty athletes, making up eight teams, took part in the 3 on 3 competition where matches are held in one half of a basketball court.   This means that the players must be able to immediately switch from defence to offence and back again and makes for some really high tempo basketball.   Even in the divisioning matches, the level of competition was very high among the teams with everyone giving their all.

Meanwhile in the other half of the court, the skills participants were pushing themselves in an effort to gain as many points as possible from the three different disciplines, which are dribbling, passing and shooting.   Once the divisioning was completed, it was time for a well deserved lunch break.

Lunch didn't merely involve food however as some of the country's top basketball players such as Jermaine Turner, Kieran O'Brien, Jerome Westbrooks and others called in to say “Hello” and to play an exhibition match.   The fun really started when they had to face up to a series of challenge matches against some of the athletes and they were very impressed by the skills shown.   Danny O'Shaughnessy's monster three pointer made a huge impression on everyone watching.

The afternoon saw the athletes competing for medals in their respective divisions.   A high level of competitiveness was evident in both halves of the gym as the athletes used all of the training and fitness built up during the season to give the best performance possible.   A high level of ability in the skills competition together with some really exciting matches in the 3 on 3 games meant that spectators were well rewarded.

Once the competition phase was completed, it was time for the medal ceremony when all of the athletes received their awards.   Although they were tired after the day's exertions, the athletes still had enough energy to then take to the floor for the disco which closed what had been a brilliant day.

Thanks to all of the participating athletes, their coaches and the volunteers who made this a day to remember for all.

Match Report

Mount Argus Tigers- 34

Killester- 25

Killester began their first match of the year with enthusiasm. However, the points were hard to come by in the first quarter. Starting the second quarter trailing to the home team by ten points, Killester suddenly found the basket and amazingly ended the half drawing 11-11.

The impressive on-form Killester team continues their scoring-ways and finished the third quarter leading the Tigers. The Killester girls dominated the end of the game, but despite their best efforts it was to be the Tigers' game, who were unstoppable in the last quarter.

Every Killester player gave their best performance and put on a brilliant display of skill and teamwork.

CHRISTMAS PARTY 2005

Friday 9th December was our Christmas Party and a well-deserved celebration of a great start to the new season. The Mount Argus Tigers team joined us for the evening and played in an energetic match against Killester. A selection of Killester National League players also came along and played in matches with the athletes. After all the hard work on the basketball court it was time for some festive fun. Games, music and a visit from Santa Claus made a brilliant party. We look forward to seeing everyone back at training in the New Year (Training resumes on Friday 13th January 2006 in Greendale Gym). Look below for a selection of pictures from the Christmas Party!

Match v Carmona Rangers

CARMONA RANGERS 22 KILLESTER 21

Killester travelled to Loughlinstown for their second League Match. With a scorching first quarter with Killester racing ahead with the points, Rangers were having difficulty getting past Killester's superb defence. John Francis was sailing past the opposition, helping to give Killester a good 10 point advantage by half time.

However, Carmona Rangers managed a remarkable comeback and managed to grab a win in the last seconds of the game.

Despite not gaining the victory, Killester displayed great team-work and showed great improvement in the short time since their last match.

'Match v Prosper Fingal

KILLESTER 16 PROSPER FINGAL 35

In an energetic match to start off the season Prosper Fingal earned an impressive 35-16 victory over Killester.

After a slow start to the match for Killester, with Jude picking up 2 points, Prosper Fingal put the pressure on and increased the pace of the match. However John Francis managed to narrow the point difference by scoring with some brilliant shots.

The dribbling and passing skills showed how far everyone has progressed in training. All Killester players made a remarkable effort and the enthusiasm and team spirit was fantastic. The support from the crowd and other players was great and added to the friendly atmosphere of the night.

Well done to everyone!
