11890 Killester slip through. OOPS
Condensation at Cork’s Parochial Hall gave Darren O’ Neill’s young 11890 Killester the points as they were being given a lesson in the harsh reality of what it is like on the road in the NIVEA FOR MEN Superleague. His side was trailing 60-44 with six and a half minutes to go when David Caballe abandoned the game due to a “Slippery Surface”. The official had stopped the game for 15 minutes in the first half and the points were awarded to the visitors on a 20-0 scoreline.
O’Neill was quick to point out that it is not a great way to win. “ It was very unsatisfactory for both teams but I know our club has been a victim before in Clontarf. It is never easy to accept a loss in those circumstances and I understand totally how Paul (Kelleher) feels”.
Kelleher said after the game “I am obviously disappointed with the way it ended but I would prefer to look at the positives, we are streets ahead of where we were last year. I was really happy with our defense, having held them to 44 points and we will now build on our offence”
Mark Keenan’s UL Eagles got back to winning form with a comfortable 99-70 victory over Belfast Star who are still without their American.
Jason Killeen headed the scoring for the home side with 19 points while Scott Kinevane and their new American Johnnie Jefferson chipped in with 17 and 16 respectively.
Keenan summed up his feelings after the game. “ I am delighted to get a win under the belt. It was so important and sets things up nicely for our game next Saturday against Killester”
In the other superleague games veteran Mike Trimmer inspired DCU Saints to a 95-83 victory over Moycullen while last years runners up Bord Gais Neptune had a terrific 85-75 victory on the road against the National Cup winners UCD Marian. Neptune’s thirty year old American Ron Thompson showed his leadershp qualities with 20 points.
In the Nivea women’s Superleague there were no real shocks as UL accounted for Oblate Dynamos 78-42. DCU Mercy were too strong for Ulster Elks where it finished 59-35. Hotel Montenotte Glanmire beat the newcomers Liffey Celtic 78-43 and 11890 were 54-51 winners away to Meteors.
