We here at the site would like to first off thank, Fiona Ward. She has been kind enough to agree to answer a few questions for KILLESTER.COM. Fiona is a current member of the Superleague Ladies team in the club and has been an Irish International at the underage level as well as many other Representative teams.
For those of you who have not had the pleasure to meet or speak to Fiona, we do hope you will find this both informative and fun.
F - For those out there who do not know you, would you mind giving us a bit of background information on yourself?
Ehhhh well my name is Fiona/Fi/ Fi Ward/Fizzle (care of Ms Behan)/Madame Butterfly /Fifi trixibelle (both care of Dee Ward) / EimNoPeFiona (also care of Dee when she gets a bit confused about which one I am)/ Peters sister/ Noels sister/ Eimears sister/ Wardys sister/ Wardy/ Dorty (my fave!) .Sin e I think. In other news, I’m STRAWBERRY BLONDE and I’m a Libran. I was 21 on Sunday-delayed presents always welcome! The team gave me a sat nav, which will be very helpful the next time I get lost on my way home from Naomh olafs (ye that place where I’ve been playing matches since I was about 11. Disaster!). Had my party on Sat and the highlight of my night was the moment Kenny walked in. No joke! He’s my actual hero especially when he misses the Carlow exit and we get to reverse back down the motorway to it. I went to school in Manor House and I’m now in Dcyeowwww studying PE and Biology. Yes, I’m gonna be a teacher when I grow up, God help the childers. I live in Raheny, way nicer than Killester lets not lie about it. Eh and I’m a lil bit dyyying to see High school musical 3 next week.
I - You have two basket-balling brothers, yes? Noel and Peter? Peter found out we were doing this little Q&A and has asked me to put this question to you.... " Ask her how it felt growing up in such a successful basketball family? "
I feel my question is more relevant!!!!
Is it true that you we were the only one in your family that was blessed with basketball talent?
What happened to starting this question with an ‘I’ word. Nay cool! My sister was actually the first one to play basketball. She took it up in her first week in Manor House but broke her nail at the first training session and was gonezo off the basketball scene after that. She brought the first ball into the house though n that’s where it all began. And what are u talking bout…Noels good!!
O - On the court, what was your best moment of your career to date?
My first game ever has to be up there. I think I was about 9 and I was playing with Mid Sutton u12s. We lost 52-2 to St. Brigids-the craic!!! Ah no in real life was prob playing with my first Dublin team and winning the inter-regionals when I was in first year. I made my first irish team at the end o the weekend and then to top it all off, we all got to stop in Matt the Threshers for chicken wings on the way home. Mmmmm splendiferous weekend!! The first few trips with that team were amazing too. Felt rappa in all my gear with Ireland written on it!!
N - National League? How do you find playing at Superleague and what are the differences to your underage career?
No more coach King. And apparently you cant just drive to the basket every time any more coz after you get past underage refs just don’t really do the whole calling fouls thing and free throws tend to not go in as much as they used to. Also apparently according to coach mark holding the ball over your head isn’t such a good move any more!!
A - Ambitions, what is your goal for this season? and in your mind what do you aspire to do in the coming season's with your team?
We’re younguns, we’ll be fab. ‘Mol and oige agus tiocfaidh siad’!!!! mm hmmm….cheese. As for this season. Birra Sprite Cup Finals or whatever its called these day?? Yesh Pleash! THAT IS ALL!!
W - What were you like when you were 10 year's old?
I was like ehhhh a boy I suppose. I played soccer, swam like 4 days a week for some random reason, swapped premier league stickers n spent my days planning my future wedding to Ryan Giggs. If peter was asked this question he’d say I was fat but I don’t agree. I was more of a healthy obese coz yes I did used to eat all the food on shopping day before anyone else got in from school!!
A - Away from basketball, what else interests you in sports or otherwise?
Home and away super fan. I loooove it, real life love! I am the proud owner of a Summer bay pencil case, hoody and sand that actually came from summer bay! I dabble in a bit of football with all the rest of the killester football heads but ‘run, catch the ball and pass it off as quickly as possible’ is prob a better name because I’m not really a fan of the whole soloing malarchy ….yet! I play a bit of golf when the pops is home and I have to behave like the model daughter cause I need money. Played a bit o tag rugby last summer, missed it this year though. Sad face. Hopefully I’ll b playing in college this year which will be the behannnter. Love to wander too-now n again to whatever part of the world billy decides to work in. I wandered to America this summer. Bit o san fran, la, vegas, new york and the likes. Fabbbb! Never spending my summer in Ireland ever again in my life! Also love to pop out on the town now n again and acquire objects of the singular type on my escapades (always abide by the 48 hour rule though!!).
R - Role Models? Would you be so kind as to tell us who inspires you? In basketball or in life? or both?
Ryan Giggs. Old but still suuuuuper. My fave. Beautiful head o curls!
D - Dictionary - Could you tell us about some of the words you use? It's almost like you have your dictionary!
You can’t ask me that, putting me on the spot. My words aren’t planned they just pop out!!
